The University Library of Freiburg (UB) and the campus libraries, like almost all academic libraries in Germany, had to be closed to the public on March13, 2020 due to the corona pandemic based on a decision of the university management and the Corona Ordinance made by the State of Baden-Württemberg.

In order to at least partially compensate for this massive restriction for studies, teaching and research, the UB team is further expanding its comprehensive range of digital media for the members of the University and providing daily updates on its website.

In addition, the University Library offers a digital article delivery service (scans from journals and collected works, free of charge) and a book delivery service by parcel post (subject to a fee) for University members

All other digital services of the University Library are continuing to run without interruption.

On April 17, 2020, the State of Baden-Württemberg published a new version of the Corona Ordinance, which basically allows the opening of libraries at universities "under conditions" and "in compliance with hygiene regulations and distance regulations" from April 20, 2020 onwards.

Students and employees of the University of Freiburg have the possibility to borrow and return books at the UB Monday-Friday 9-17 o'clock.

This makes it possible in detail:

  • Self-lending in the basement
  • Pick up of orders in the basement
  • Collection of interlibrary loans on the ground floor
  • Return of books on the ground floor

Entrance: Platz der Universität 2 (revolving door east), exit: Milchstraße (revolving door west)

Orders and reservations in the Catalogue plus of the University Library are also possible again for students and staff of the University with a university account. The textbook collection II remains closed. The volumes can be ordered to the UB.

However, the number of persons simultaneously admitted to the building must be limited. Please limit your stay at the University Library to what is necessary. The access does not entitle you to use the reading halls! Catalogue searches, scans or copies are not possible - there is no consultation at the information desk on the ground floor. Access to the reading rooms, the parlatorium and the media centre is not possible.

The requirements for access are:

  • Wearing a mouth-nose cover
  • Showing the UniCard
  • Call number(s) researched in advance in the catalogue
  • Observance of the obligation to maintain distance and the rules of hygiene

Students and employees of the University of Freiburg can use the reading rooms of the University Library from 20.05.2020 after prior online registration.

This makes this possible in detail:

  • stay for learning purposes in reading rooms 1–4
  • Use of the reading room facilities
  • Ordering and use of literature that can only be borrowed into the reading room
  • Use of the scanning and copying equipment in the reading rooms

The conditions for access are:
