The Chair of Forest and Environmental Policy is seeking a

Doctoral candidate in the Project "Policy and Participatory Governance of Flood Risks in Ghana"
Part-time position (75 %), Start-date: 01.05.2020

The research project PARADES, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (​BMBF​), is an interdisciplinary team of scientists and practitioners from Germany and Ghana establishing a p​articipatory assessment of flood related disaster prevention and the development of an adapted coping strategy for flood risks in Ghana.​

The subproject ​"Policy and Participatory Governance of ​Flood Risks in Ghana" prepares an analysis of the legal regulations and organizational structures, as well as the networks of actors of the existing flood risk management system in Ghana. Building on that, policy options are evaluated and developed for participatory governance of flood risk management, together with the local stakeholders and policy makers. Here you will be working closely together with the PostDoc in the subproject, as well as with project partners and other local experts, stakeholders and policy makers in Ghana. The research involves documentary analysis, qualitative interviews and participatory stakeholder workshops.

Tasks:

  • Independent​ research in the subproject and participation in the implementation of project tasks, in particular the conception and implementation of a policy and network analysis of the participatory governance of flood risk management system in Ghana;
  • Preparation​ of research reports, presentations at meetings and similar and the organization of events;
  • Publications​ of research results in international journals and presentations at scientific conferences.

Your Profile

  • You have an​ above-average Masters degree at a university in politics or Social sciences relating to environmental sciences, alternatively in environmental sciences with a clear political/social sciences focus.
  • You​ have well-founded scientific knowledge in at least one of the following areas of focus: participatory governance, participation research, water governance, flood risk policies and planning, theories and concepts of policy analysis;
  • You have sound​knowledge of qualitative social research. experiences in the application of any of the methods of empirical social research mentioned will be an advantage;
  • You are willingness​ to travel, i.a. to Ghana;
  • Research​ or work experience in an African country will be an advantage;
  • ​You are proactive and have a high level of team spirit and social competence;
  • You are fluent in English; knowledge of German is an advantage;
  • You have experience and enjoy cooperating with other disciplines and practice partners;
